Workshop on Menstrual Hygiene
“Even
in today’s advanced, educated society, menstruation is a taboo that is often
not talked about.”
The
Interact Club of M L Khanna DAV Public School, Dwarka organised a workshop on
menstrual hygiene for the girls of class VII. The workshop aimed at providing
the much needed information about this issue, which is still considered a taboo
in India. The resource persons were from Salaam Balak Trust which is a non-governmental, non-profit
organization based in India.
The
school doctor Ms. Ruchi Chopra, also one of the resource persons, discussed the
topic in detail. The students were asked to share their own experiences of
menarche. The school doctor discussed menstrual cycle and the occurrence of
adolescence in girls and the fluctuations in hormones during this phase.
Ms.
Annu ,resource person from Salam Balak Trust demonstrated models of the female reproductive system and a
lot of sanitary products which can be effectively used during this time. There
were discussions about environmental degradation due to improper disposal of
sanitary napkins. She also talked about the need and importance of maintaining hygiene
during this time.
The
students also freely interacted during the discussions and raised their doubts
and questions about the various social norms and customs attached to
menstruation. The school doctor got them rid of the doubts they had.
The
workshop was very enlightening, and the students learnt a great deal about
menstrual hygiene.
