Interactors visit Blind Relief
Association
The
students of the Interact Club of M.L. Khanna DAV Public School, Dwarka, visited
the Blind Relief Association at Lajpat Nagar. The Blind Relief Association
focuses on providing education and training to the visually challenged,
enabling them to realize their potential and be self reliant. The visit was
organised to sensitise the students about the need to consider visually
impaired people as one of their own. The students established a vermi compost
unit there. The visually impaired were taught how to prepare Vermi-compost as a
vocational job so that they can earn money for their living by preparing
vermicompost using easily available raw materials with meagre investment.
The
The students spent time with them and got to
know that those students learnt sewing, computers, braille script, candle
making and paper bag making. They also saw the units where visually challenged
children worked, and also purchased the products made by them. There is also a
recording studio, where the volunteers can get audio for books recorded.
They have special computers which announced whatever they typed, thus, enabling
them to surf internet and compose mails. The students were also shown the
stylus used for writing the braille script. The librarian of the association, allowed the students to see the NCERT books in the braille version. This was an eye-opening experience for the students. They realised that those kids aren’t at all different from us, just that they are specially gifted doesn’t mean that they can’t live a normal life. The zest that they have for life and learning- the curiosity that they have is indeed wonderful. All they need is a fair opportunity to realise their full potential.
The students went there to gain some experience and sensitivity towards the visually impaired but, returned back with a treasure chest of memories and knowledge about them. It was indeed a wonderful visit.
