Interactors of DAV Dwarka attend ‘Vision Divyang’

Students of the Interact Club of DAV Dwarka attended Vision Divyang at Talkatora Stadium on 14th October 2016. Rotaractors of Rotary International District 3012 in association with Vision Divyang Foundation organized the event on the eve of 15^th October to mark the Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. The first of its kind event witnessed participation of more than 3000 students, special educators and NGO. The event was planned for the empowerment of Children with Special Needs(CWSN) to pay tribute to our beloved Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam who had a special place for these children in his heart. This was one of the largest events for the Divyang Jan to support the persons with disability. Special /Inclusive children groups from various schools from Delhi and NCR participated in the event and gave wonderful  performances in the form of dance, aerobics, fashion show, singing etc. It was heartwarming to see the special children performing with dexterity and the zeal and enthusiasm of these blessed children to lead the life without any regret and converting their DISABILITY into DIS IS ABILITY was extremely commendable. The event was graced by the humble presence of Boman Irani, the famous actor. He zealously applauded this novel initiative by Rotary and promised to be there for the cause of CWSN. Lots of inspirational speeches were delivered by dignitaries from varoius ministries, NGOs and spiritual organizations. The students received participation certificates and refreshment boxes. A Divyang Kit for the welfare of Divyang Jan in schools and an Appreciation Award was presented to the school. The event was indeed a small step towards making the making the society realise the true potential and worth of‘DIVYANG-JAN’ so that we gradually move towards a society without barriers and social justice for all.

Acknowledging the efforts of teachers  in shaping their personality and influencing their lives, the students of the Interact Club of DAV Dwarka appreciated teachers on their birthdays. They presented handmade cards, sang songs and birthday greetings to make their role models feel special.Their loving gesture was a mark of gratitude for them in illuminating their life's journey.This initiative of the Interact Club was highly applauded by the Principal and the teachers.

                   “Let us pray for peace: peace in the world and in each of our hearts”

DAV Public School, Dwarka believes in nurturing the students with vedic wisdom and raising them as global citizens in whom values of service, kindness, respect, peace, non- violence, unity and responsibility are always entrenched. It is with this mission the the Interact Club of the school organized a vast array of activities within and beyond the school campus to celebrate UN International Day of Peace which is celebrated all over the world on 21st September.

A dove with olive branch, the symbol of peace, was prepared and hung in front of the reception area. The students of classes I and II lit candles before the eternal symbol of peace that reminds us that we must never give up on peace. The students of classes III to V, dressed up in costumes of different states and cultures stood united and formed a grand symbol of peace. Wonderful dance performance by students on peace songs enthralled everyone.

To sensitize people to the sufferings of war and its impact on humankind and how peace can be a stronger weapon than war, students of classes VI to VIII lined up for a Peace March to the market area of sector-6, Dwarka with banners and posters prepared by them. They took a peace pledge to disseminate the message of peace, prosperity and universal values of ethics and discipline among the people. The students also approached many people there like rickshaw pullers, vegetable vendors and shop keepers and asked about their peace pledge. The onlookers really appreciated the involvement of students in this kind of social activity spreading such precious messages.

 As a part of this endeavour, the students of classes IX and X designed and painted a ‘Graffiti Wall’. Children drew designs that represented the core values of our celebration: peace, harmony, acceptance, respect and non-violence. All the activities were followed by pledge for peace emphasizing harmony, empathy and non-violence. Dwarka Dheers vowed to nurture positivity and promote brotherhood. They also promised to live with courage, strength, and kindness in the service of world peace.

With the intention to cultivate every child's innate ability to foster peace, our little ones of Pre-school and Pre-nursery were also involved in this celebration. The toddlers had great fun releasing white balloons into the sky and spreading the message of peace all over.

The week long activities concluded with the release of white pigeons, the messengers of peace, into the sky by Principal Monika Mehan.

The world still has a long way to go to achieve universal peace and it is possible if everyone plays a vital role in promoting harmony. This endeavour by the Interact Club of DAV Public School, Dwarka was indeed an effective and tremendous effort towards the goal of worldwide peace.

                                       Train the Trainers

The Interact Club of the school organized a cluster training session for teachers ‘Train the Trainers’ in association with Indian Cancer Society. Few teachers of the school attended the two day intensive training workshop on awareness against cancer. The resource persons on the first day of the occasion were Ms Aruna Ummat, Director, Training, Indian Cancer Society and Ms Rekha Gulabani, Project Head, Breast Cancer Care, Indian Cancer Society. The workshop commenced with the address of Ms Aruna Ummat in which she apprised the gathering of Indian Cancer society and its role in advocating, screening, training and service (detection centre). Several facts about cancer were discussed and the impact of today’s life style in the rise in cancer cases was talked about in detail.

 Cancer which is often associated with fatality can be avoided by early detection. It can be prevented at three stages. The primary level wherein leading a healthy life can steer us away from this disease. The secondary level is in which cancer screening and early detection plays a vital role and finally the tertiary level whereby clinical intervention becomes necessary to mitigate the disease. Cancer is dreaded because people fear disfigurement, disability, dislocation, dependence, destitution and death.  It has a great impact on man’s physical, occupational social, family, psychological and financial wellbeing.

Indian Cancer Society believes that one should conquest cancer by choice and not by chance. Leading a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in eradicating cancer.

Another major area of concern in the fight against cancer is the use of tobacco. It was informed to the participants that a single cigarette contains about 7000 chemicals. Smoking causes over 4 million deaths in India each year. It accounts for 12 per cent of all new cancer cases and almost one in four cancer deaths are due to smoking.

On the second day of the workshop, resource person Ms Sunita Gupta, Joint Secretary, Indian Cancer Society acquainted the participants of the ill effects of nicotine and the rising number of the urban youth being addicted to hukkah. A very interactive session on the harmful effects of nicotine was held.

Ms. Indra Jasuja, Honorary Joint Secretary, Indian Cancer Society elucidated the symptoms of cervical cancer, breast cancer. She stressed on Pap Smear Test for all sexually active girls for this test can detect abnormal cells that may one day become cancer. It takes 7-10 years for cancer to progress from pre cancer to a full blown cancer. Early detection, therefore, can save lives.

The symptoms of breast cancer were discussed and the way to self-examine for signs of breast cancer was demonstrated. Finally the importance of the word CAUTION was emphasized.

The session concluded with the participants aware and enlightened of the symptoms and the preventive measures to fight against cancer. They enthusiastically vowed to join hands with the Indian Cancer Society to fight against the dreaded disease.

Rotary Club of Delhi Uptown conferred upon the title ‘Nation Builders-2016’ to the Interact Club incharges on the occasion of Teachers’ day. Ms. Lata Pandit and Ms. Pratibha Nagpal, the Interact Club Incharges of the school were honoured with the title by the Club President Rtn. Krishan Lal and Rtn V.K. Jain in a ceremony organized at Sunder Lal Jain hospital, Ashok Vihar. They were presented certificate of honour for their remarkable contribution as leaders motivating the youth towards community service. The occasion was graced by the office bearers of the club. Principal Monika Mehan congratulated the teachers on their achievement.                                                                        

Promoting International Understanding-Cultural Meet

A group of 28 students of the Interact Club  of D. A.V Public School, Dwarka, went to Pragati Maidan to attend a cultural meet with the American delegate, Mr. Douglas Fowler. The event was organized by the Embassy of the United States of America. The main objective of the event was to provide the students an insight of American culture. It was one and a half hour session.

The genial chat started with the introduction of Mr. Douglas Fowler and Mr. Branden Young. Mr Young interacted with students about their backgrounds, interests and intentions for future. He apprised the children of some eye opening facts about USA.He talked about similarities between Indian and American cultures. He elucidated that both the countries have a deeply ingrained democratic culture and while the U.S is the world's oldest democracy, India is the world's largest democracy. Both the countries love to take risks to create wealth and new businesses. He emphasized that India has a great potential that needs to be unleashed. The session became lively when he compared the film industries of the two countries.

Then Mr. Fowler asked few questions to the students about the Indian Education System, their aspired career and favourite universities in the U.S.A. Most of the students showed their inclination towards Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of technology and many of them were apprehensive about the high expenditure. He patiently answered all their queries. Moreover, he suggested some other good universities like Stanford and Columbia and encouraged them to enroll their names for different courses. He was deeply impressed by the enthusiasm displayed by the students, who raised interesting questions. They wanted to know about the impact of U.S Presidential election on India. He assured the children that nothing is going to affect Modi - Obama bond as the Modi government has opened up gates to do friendly and transparent business. At the end, he appreciated Indian food, its diversity and showed a high respect for the Indians.

                                    Teachers’ Day Celebration

Teachers’ day is a very special day to acknowledge and appreciate the contribution of teachers in enriching the personality and enlightening the path of their disciples.

The students of the Interact Club made this day memorable for their teachers by organizing a special assembly. The programme began with a prayer song. Samiksha Puri, the President of the Interact Club, delivered a speech on the prominent role of teachers in bringing out the untamed talents of students. A melodious song expressing gratitude towards teachers was sung by the students of the Interact club. A scintillating dance performance by the students of classes 9 to 11 enthralled everyone.

Vaibhav of class 11 recited a self composed poem on teachers. The Head Boy and the Head Girl of the school presented a beautiful handmade card and a bouquet to Principal Monika Mehan. Principal , in her address, congratulated the teachers and highlighted their role  in tapping the fertile minds of  young children and planting the seeds of curiosity in them. She laid emphasis on moral and ethical values which students must learn from teachers.

 Students presented handmade cards to teachers as a token of love and appreciation for them. Senior students took the responsibility of teaching. They felt proud and realized the importance of teachers in their lives.

A lot of fun games like musical chair, lemon race, tug of war etc. were organized for teachers. It was heartwarming to see teachers reliving their childhood through these activities. Music department teachers presented a medley of songs. Teachers shook their legs on foot tapping numbers. The whole atmosphere was euphoric. The wonderful celebration ended with scrumptious lunch for teachers.

Interactors of DAV Dwarka  Attend ‘Touch the Future’ DILA 2016

The Rotary Club organizes DILA (District Interact Leadership Assembly) every year to celebrate the youth’s potential. Students of the Interact Club of DAV Dwarka attended ‘Touch the Future’ DILA 2016 on 2^nd September 2016 organised by International Rotary District 3012 at Amity University, Noida. This event enabled the Interactors to get groomed and understand their roles and responsibilities, in the Rotary movement.  It was a platform to meet with Rotarians of their district and other Interact Club members to do fellowship & networking. Interactors also learnt to handle the issues which are a challenge to the society from experienced and eminent Rotarians

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University inspired the interactors to imbibe leadership qualities. He also advised them to have confidence and commitment towards their work, have role models in their lives and always think for others before themselves.

Disitrict Trainer PDG Rtn. Ramesh Aggarwal apprised everyone of the purpose of DILA.

DIR 2016-17 Eshita Bhat and her team were formally installed. Samiksha Puri, DIR Elect, Rotary Dist. 3012 and the President of the Interact Club of DAV Dwarka was pinned a badge by the DG Sharat Jain. He announced this year’s theme of the Rotary International ‘Rotary serving Humanity’. He also threw light on the various projects taken up by Rotary Dist. 3012 and encouraged the schools to participate in projects like Wash, Give It Up movement and the Youth programmes. An overview of the Interact Club and the roles and responsibilities of the office bearers of the Interact Club was also presented by him.

There were cultural performances by the Interact Club students of various schools of District 3012. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Dist. Chair New Generation PP Rtn Deepak Gupta.

The interactors were given food packets and the Certificate of Participation.
